What exactly is BOTOX®
Botox is an injectable neuromodulator. It is made up of safe, purified proteins that aid in relaxing facial muscles, correcting wrinkles and preventing new wrinkles from forming. Not only can Botox smooth your skin, it has also been proven to offer therapeutic treatments for:
- Gummy smiles / high smile lines
- Jaw pain / TMJD (tempromandibular joint disorder)
- Teeth grinding
- Muscle spasms
BOTOX is an FDA approved treatment that has proven itself to be a safe and effective. On its own, it can produce a softer, smoother, and younger appearance, and in combination with other dental procedures, it can promote a healthier and more attractive smile.
What to expect for your BOTOX® appointment
Dr. Shields will review your specific goals and thoroughly explain your unique treatment plan. After mapping out the injection sites on your skin, Dr. Shields uses a very fine needle to inject Botox into the area being treated. The process is typically completed in just 10 minutes and is almost completely painless – at most, you may feel a sensation similar to being bit by a mosquito.
What to expect after your appointment
You can resume normal activities immediately after getting Botox, however, you’ll want to avoid rubbing the treated area—doing so can cause the Botox to migrate to other parts of your face. Side effects are rare. The most frequent effects reported are bruising, pain, or swelling around the injection sites.
Once you’ve received Botox, you may not notice a difference right away. The injectable typically takes 3-7 days to see results. Results typically last for three months, but in some cases, can last for up to six months. During that time, the muscles injected with Botox will not contract, preventing wrinkles from forming or deepening.
